Ceramic product of the week - Ravens Java
Product of the Week
Studio Fagerstedt likes to work in series. For example, a mug usually has three sizes, espresso/mulled wine, coffee and tea, and preferably roughly the same design. But the combination of clay and glaze sets them apart quite a bit. We mostly use two different stoneware clays, one light sand-colored and one black, for most of the products we produce. When our favorite glazes are fired into the ware, the products take on different expressions and different looks and therefore also different names, such as Ravens Java, Crystal Culture and Blackstone.
We present the Ravens Java
series
One of our own favorite series is Ravens Java and its sister series Ravens Gold. Like most of what we do, the Ravens Java products have a rustic look with a lot of craftsmanship. The clay is black or brownish-black and it is quite coarse. Since we like to leave parts of the product, usually part of the outside, unglazed, we have learned to smooth the surface so that it feels smooth and nice. The clay is fired at a high temperature and becomes ceramics that are 100% waterproof and of high quality.
The glaze on Ravens Java and Ravens Gold is incredibly exciting. One is silver-black and the other is gold-colored with blackness. They are lively and mischievous and cannot be controlled. Sometimes the glaze runs and sometimes it doesn't cover as we intended but becomes more honey brown but on the fantastic occasions when it turns out good, then it really turns out good and the potter can get a little sentimentally teary. The glaze becomes magically soft and a little rich and it sparkles wonderfully in the sunlight or in the glow of candlelight. The silver glaze makes the surface resemble fine leather or liquid cast iron. Or something in between. The gold glaze shines where it is thick and gravitates towards black where it is thinner. Both glazes can flow out a little and form the occasional drop. It looks alive and exciting and it reminds us of the material, liquid glass on clay, and of how the process of creating ceramics actually works.
Feel free to browse our products in the Ravens Java and Ravens Gold series - teapots, mugs, plates, bowls, candlesticks and an exciting 72 cm high sculptural candlestick with a mixture of both glazes.
